“Being a Young Leader is the best thing I’ve done in Scouts. It’s brilliant. I’ve really grown in confidence and I know the skills I’ve learned will make a big difference when applying for college and jobs”

What is a Young Leader?

Young Leaders are Explorer Scouts who volunteer with a Beaver Colony, Cub Pack or Scout Troop.  As a Young Leader you’ll play a full part in the leadership of your Section’s programme.  You’ll get highly practical, hands-on experience.  You’ll be able to make progress on your Scout and DofE Awards.  You’ll stand out from your friends because of your leadership capabilities.  You’ll learn #skillsforlife.

Why be a Young Leader?

Young Leaders say they really enjoy running games, activities and parts of the programme.  As well as this:

  • You’ll bring new ideas and youth-shaped thinking
  • You’ll develop and practice your leadership, teamworking, organising and communication skills
  • You’ll gain transferable skills such as planning, problem-solving and decision-making
  • You’ll learn to take responsibility, be resilient and gain in confidence

We have Young Leaders in Scouting because they’re a vital part of Scouting’s future.  We have Young Leaders:

  • To provide positive role models close in age and experience to the young people they are leading
  • To support Section Leaders in delivering the programme
  • To create a pipeline of potential adult volunteers who have Scouting skills and knowledge
  • To, in time, increase the number of young adult Leaders
  • To enable Scouting to grow and serve more young people by having more adult Leaders

What will you gain?

You’ll gain practical skills and leadership experience which will help you stand out in day-to-day life and when you’re applying for college, university and jobs.
